Top Maritime Hub globally – Make a guess?

Which cities ranked as the world’s top maritime hub? That too for 8 consecutive years.

As reported by the Business Times, 43 cities offering port and shipping business services were rated based on an International Shipping Centre Development (ISCD) Index.

Singapore has placed first with a score of 97.2 points out of the maximum 100, significantly higher than the overall average score of 58.5 points.

The remaining top 10 cities in order include, London, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Dubai, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Athens, New York and Ningbo – 4 Asian and 4 European cities dominating the top.

Experts believe Singapore ranked top because of its ‘robust port infrastructure, a comprehensive range of maritime services and supportive government policies’.

It is interesting to note that despite the pandemic, 17 international shipping groups either expanded their operations or set up a base in Singapore in 2020. Additionally, Singapore port handled the second-highest container throughput at 36.9 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).

Singapore continues to develop its maritime industry with a focus on technological advances in future shipping fuels, innovation safety improvements, nurturing young talent and workforce transformation.

Singapore’s international maritime centre remains a vibrant marketplace centred on a strong core of shipping companies and a comprehensive pool of maritime services such as shipbroking, marine insurance, ship financing and maritime law and arbitration.
